To get a taste of the local scene, discover the Combined Club aka the Tin Shed on Ashford Avenue overlooking the Dickson Inlet, just a couple of blocks away. The Tin Shed is a popular meeting place and something of an institution for locals and visitors. It shares a proud history firstly as the Divisional Sugar Board’s original shed and wharf built in 1877. In 1962 the inception of the Boating Club began with a race to the Low Isles. This race is now held every Australia Day, and is celebrated with much fanfare in the town. The local government and boating club entered into an agreement in 1979 and thus the “combined” club became a recognised not for profit entity. The clubrooms have come to be known as The Tin Shed, and it’s popularity continues to grow. The building has now been expanded with a new floor upstairs that is air conditioned, and includes a childrens play area, rounding it out as a community-based function centre with restaurant and bar, and solid entertainment usually booked for the weekends.
